Conversation English: Talking About Food

Food is one of the conversation topics that we commonly talk about. If you like to eat as I do, you’ll find this lesson very useful in your daily speaking.

In this lesson, we will follow a conversation between two friends who are deciding what they should eat for lunch.

Lunch is the food we eat in the daytime. In most countries, lunchtime is between 12 midday and 3 PM. Some people enjoy late lunch, which is later than 3 PM but before 4:30 PM, while other people prefer to have their lunch very early. If you have lunch earlier than 12 midday, you might call this ‘Brunch’.

Brunch is a late breakfast and an early lunch. Brunch can be eaten anytime between 10:30 AM and before 12 midday.

Let’s read the conversation between Tom and Lulu about what they plan to eat for lunch! Pay attention to the new vocabulary we use when we are talking about food.

Lulu has invited Tom to join her for lunch at a new Italian restaurant. They decided to check out the menu on the restaurant’s website before going to the restaurant. Lulu decided to have prawns with a side of fries as an appetizer, and Tom decided to have an assorted platter including chicken wings, spare ribs, and stuffed mushrooms as his appetizer.

Appetizers are small portions of food that are served at the beginning of a meal. If you are having a three-course meal, the appetizer is the first dish you will eat.

An assorted platter means a plate of different small appetizers served together. Assorted platters are a good choice if you want to try different appetizers or if you want to share appetizers with other people at your table.

Let’s practice ordering from the Appetizer Menu below. What would you like to eat as an appetizer?

After the appetizers, the next course is the main course. The main course can also be called the entrée. This is the biggest meal in a three-course meal. Lulu and Tom have decided to share a pizza for their main course.

Look at the Main Course Menu and choose what you’d like to eat as an entrée. If you don’t feel like ordering a pizza, you can choose another meal instead.

The last course is called dessert. Dessert is usually something sweet which most people eat at the end of their meal. Lulu decided to eat vanilla ice cream for dessert, and Tom couldn’t decide between the cheesecake and the milk tart.

Look at the dessert menu below and choose what you would like to eat for dessert.

Now that we have learned how to talk about different meals on the menu, let’s practice more examples of food-related vocabulary.
